Spring, summer and fall maintenance is very straight forward. Make sure that the gutter system and downspouts are clean and free of all debris so the water flow is not obstructed. Most debris ends up in either the corners or right where the downspouts are located since that is the lowest point in the system.
Winter can be rough on your gutters especially if we have received a lot of snow. In the winter heat loss from your house, roof vents and ambient temperatures can cause some areas on your roof to thaw and melt before your gutters do causing them to freeze over and that's what creates cascading Ice sickles, frozen gutters and eventually ice dams.
Frozen gutters and ice sickles are not avoidable and since we drop below freezing on a daily basis during the winter. Heat tape can help keep things thawed and moving in some scenarios, but it is not a miracle product that keeps your eves completely snow and ice free all winter.
* ICE DAM SOLUTION*
Clear the snow off of your eves! That's it! You don't need any fancy gimmicks, or expensive heating cables. Snow rakes have been around for a long time and they are extremely affordable online. Keep your eves clear of snow so the melt water has some where to go.
